Fields of Research and the Triad
The scientific work at the Institute of Structural Mechanics and Lightweight Design is focused on the components and their load bearing structure. In this context we concentrate on the topics Methods & Optimization, Dynamics & Aeroelastics as well as Operational Durability & Structural Health Monitoring. A focal point in our researches is the Aerospace. It includes every aspect of lightweight design as well as it assumes the consideration of the very specific requirements of space traveling.
Methods & Optimization
The topic Methods & Optimization includes the development of detection methods to ensure an effective structural design and further it deals with the derivation of methods for optimization.
Dynamics & Aeroelastics
One basic point of Dynamics & Aeroelastics is the optimization of structures regarding their vibration behavior and aeroelastic characteristics. In addition this topic contains questions concerning noise, vibration and harshness.
Structural Durability & Structural Health Monitoring
Experimental and numerical studies in terms of the behavior during degradation processes under cyclic loads make use of a growing proportion of our researches. These contain the derivation of damage evaluation methods. To make use of this knowledge about Structural Durability in Structural Health Monitoring systems is one of the main tasks in our scientific work.
Extremely high speed, extremely high temperature stresses and an extremely lightweight designed structure characterize the environment and requirements of Spacecrafts and satellites. Considering these specifications we are induced to reevaluate and to embed our researches into overall systems of spacecrafts.
The Triad of Lightweight DesignSLA
The calculation and optimization of lightweight designed structures require the equivalent treatment of tests, numerics and analytics. This is because only a thorough and holistic methodology truly allows the development of solutions that are both efficient as well as practical. Therefore our research approaches place immense importance on the usage of these three foundational pillars of scientific methodology. Tests give us information about the phenomena we have to analyse. Their heavy costs in money and especially in time increase the importance of numerics in validated computer simulations. Further the analytic model is required to unterstand the whole structural behavior and to determine the interdependencies of all relevant parameters. Finally combining these instruments in an efficient way is the necessary art to succeed in research. This is how our experts enable the optimization of the structures of our costumers.
