As part of the exhibition stand of the BMWi (German Federal Ministry of Economy and Energy) at the ILA 2016 (International Aerospace Exhibition), the SLA presented the iBOSS research project (Intelligent Building Blocks for On-Orbit Satellite Servicing) granted by DLR (German Aerospace Center). Together with the project partners of the TU Berlin, FZI Karlsruhe, RIF, JKIC and the MMI of RWTH Aachen University, the Team demonstrated the full modular satellite concept.
The ILA offered from 1st to 4th June in Schönefeld near Berlin exhibitors from over 40 countries the opportunity to present their research, developments and products to a wide audience. With more than 150,000 visitors, the ILA is one of the most prestigious international trade fairs for the aerospace industry. On the public days the ILA opened to all visitors and inspired the guests to aerospace topics.
In the demonstrated iBOSS scenario a robotic manipulator repeatedly coupled to a modular satellite building-block by means of the multi-functional interface ISSI (Intelligent Space System Interface), which has been also developed within the iBOSS project. This building-block than detached his ISSI connection to the neighboring block and coupled successfully to a different one.
This innovative modular satellite architecture, with its complex requirements, regarding manufacture, handling, integration and qualification is subject of current research at SLA in the joint projects iBOSS-3.
